ANOTHER BEAT: an EP by Katie Buchanan
Four Songs. Four Videos. Four Weeks.

Youtube Playlist:

3.13.13 : Going Dark
3.20.13 : Chocolate and Whiskey
3:27:13: Another Beat
4.3.13: A Hand, A Heart

Beginning March 13, 2013, Katie Buchanan will release a new song a week as part of her new EP: ANOTHER BEAT. Cobbled together from sights and sounds, made and found, between a post-Sandy New York and a hasty retreat back west, the new short-form sees Buchanan returning to her one-woman-band roots with a wealth of new tricks and ideas.

The songs draw a through line as production shifts from lo-fi blues riffs to soaring acoustic breakthroughs. The 'heart' repeats as an obsessive motif, focusing not on the standard question of love but rather a larger issue of what it means to have a heart at all. How does it harden and where does it go? And how do you get it back?

released March 12, 2013

Track Name: Going Dark
I acted with the best of them
A shadow of who I'd been
You should've known better
I smile lies and I'm surprised
You've had the time at all
To forget her

Shuffle fast, I never last
I can't relax until I'm
Out of sight
But joke's on me, 'cause all you'll see is
Setup, setup, setup

I'll hold on to what I left
Until my fingers bleed
Anything familiar now is
Everything I need
I could count my time more readily
In crudely crafted melodies
A shade of me you'll never never never see
Track Name: Chocolate & Whiskey
The coffee seeps out of me by six am
The city wakes and I can dream again
My mind fills up with stories of back when
But I don't remember much about how they end

So it's chocolate, chocolate whiskey these days
My vices lack a necessary weight
So I lie a bit and pad my case
Oh oh I lie a bit but I know it won't take

'Cause I'm living now on stolen hours
I'm moving way too fast for my heart to react
And so it's beating now on stolen hours
But I know it won't last

I was young once, I'll be young again
I'm getting back to who I should've been
I'll make a list of all I missed, and then
I'll change a bit and hope that it sinks in

The whiskey fades and I will wake again
A head to ache, a heart to break and mend
The guilt it lays on heavy and thick
But I don't remember much about what it meant.
Track Name: Another Beat
You're too hard to catch
So I'm giving up oh oh
I'm giving up oh oh
And I thought that I met
Someone who worth a bit of effort
But I was wrong

So I left for my own sake
Saved a little bit of my heart, oh oh
My heart, oh oh
It was too hard to break
I take another beat, I take another beat

Steady my hands, I shake not for you
I swear it's the moment
It's what it's come to
I was robbed of the adventure
The happy-ended picture
Now I'm deaf, dumb, and bitter for you

You were right all along
You were right all along
I never wanted answers
I only wanted love
But when faced with the options
Of none of the above
It was easier to leave
Than be who you thought I was

Track Name: A Hand, A Heart
Christmas Eve, some years ago
Nine o'clock, three below
All was well was well, time held its breath for us

A quiet night, a simple life
Fighting hard to get a grip on clearer minds
All was well, we held on tight

Oh oh oh oh
Hold out a hand, hold out a heart for me
Oh oh oh oh
I got a plan, I got a war to lead
All we are, is all we need

Were we wiser once, was it not enough?
Were we victims of wanting more than wanting love
When all was well, it wasn't enough

Fall away, fall away now
Cut out your faith if it's holding you down
I promise I'll wait, I'll wait til you come back around
